Cygnet Primary Care Network Patient Participation Group (PPG)
Background
In 2011, a national initiative encouraged GP practices to engage more closely with their patients through the creation of Patient Participation Groups (PPGs). This became known as the Patient Participation Directed Enhanced Service. PPGs were formed as a way to strengthen the relationship between practices and their local communities.
Due to their success, PPGs became a formal part of the General Medical Services (GMS) contract, embedding them into everyday practice across the country.
The Impact of COVID-19
Like many other community-led efforts, the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the functioning of PPGs. Lockdowns and social distancing led to communication challenges, with many patients and staff facing understandable anxiety around group interactions and public engagement.
Relaunch of the PPG – January 2023
In response to these challenges—and recognising the importance of patient voice—Cygnet Primary Care Network (PCN) made the decision to bring together patients from across its four practices to form a joint PPG.
Our first PCN-wide PPG meeting was held in January 2023 at Downley Community Centre, marking the launch of the Cygnet PCN PPG.
About the PPG Today
The Cygnet PCN PPG represents patients from:
- Desborough Surgery,
- Kingswood Surgery,
- Priory Surgery,
- Tower House Surgery.
The group now meets bi-monthly and includes 10 active members, each bringing the voice and perspective of their individual practice communities. Together, we aim to support local health services, improve communication, and promote patient involvement in shaping care across the PCN.

What Does a PPG Do?
The PPG provides a space for patients to:
- Share feedback and ideas for service improvements
- Support health campaigns and raise awareness
- Strengthen ties between practices and the people they serve
It’s a vital way for patients to be heard and help make a positive impact on local healthcare.
